The Famous French Onion Soup

Writer's picture: AntonAnton

25 min- The hot soup, the nice sweetness of the onion, and the comforting molten cheese and toasted bread will create a perfect dinner. Bon appétit!

Ingredients: (for 5 people)

5 onions

5 (or more!) slices of bread

5 handful of grated swiss cheese

2 cubes of chicken bouillon

1. Making the Soup:

  • Cut your onions into thin slices

  • In a large saucepan/pot, put the onions on high heat with a drizzle of olive oil

  • Let them color while stirring to avoid having any burning (you can have a pinch of sugar after about 3 minutes to facilitate the caramelization process)

  • Dilute your cubes in 2L (approximately) of water (to do so, place the water in a saucepan with the cubes and let it boil while stirring for a good dilution)

  • Once the onions are caramelized, pour the bouillon into your saucepan/pot

  • Cover and let simmer on low heat for at least 20 minutes

2. The "gratiné d'oignons"

  • Preheat the oven at 180°C or 365°F

  • Pour your soup into the bowls

  • Add the croutons (the equivalent of a slice of bread). To prepare the croutons just toast slices of bread and cut them into cubes.

  • Add a handful of cheese

  • Place the bowls into the oven until the cheese is nicely molten

Enjoy!

Passionately yours,

Anton
